  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is a specific type of talking therapy which aims to understand our thoughts, beliefs, emotions and behaviours and through recognition of these allows us to make a positive change. Through the sessions I will support you to understand your current difficulties and the underlying thoughts, emotions and behaviours which surround these. By understanding the vicious cycle that these form we will set collaborative goals to break this cycle and guide you towards making changes to achieve these. CBT is a therapy which requires active participation- unfortunately I have no magic wand! This means that we will be working together to make changes to your thoughts and behaviour. Think of me like a personal trainer, for your mind.

I believe that I am a compassionate yet solution focused individual, and this translates into my sessions. I will be able to empathise with you whilst teaching you skills and techniques to work towards your goals.

  • Finding the right therapist is essential to the effectiveness of CBT. The title of therapist is unregulated which means that anyone can call themselves a therapist or cognitive behaviour therapist and offer CBT without adequate training! An accredited therapist is someone who holds accreditation with the Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) which ensures a guarantee on criteria they have met and the standard of training that they have completed. You can find my name on the “find a therapist” section on www.babcp.co.uk. Throughout my training, and career I have received supervision from another more senior CBT therapist, and continue to do so as a mandatory requirement of my accreditation.

  • Sometimes it can be challenging to know what therapy is right for us: counselling, coaching or CBT. As described above, CBT requires active participation and the aim of the sessions is for us to work towards your goals. We will be examining your thoughts, feelings and behaviours and therefore it is important that you feel that you are able to explore these and be willing to work towards change. Although we will be understanding the past and what has led you to this point and making links to historical events, the therapy will be focused on the present. There will be home practice tasks between the sessions to continue learning and test out the beliefs that we are challenging during the sessions.
